... Against Daylight Savings

As a child I loved daylight savings time. Although losing the hour in the spring was never fun, I was the kind of kid that rose and fell with the sun. It was very difficult to fall asleep in the early spring while the sun blared through the blinds and the sound of nature continued to fill the air. But most of all, being able to play Lego with my brothers for an extra hour in the fall seemed like a holiday of its own. In fact, to this day, my one brother still refers to the "fall back" as a "long weekend".

This sentiment changed dramatically once BabyK was on the scene. As any parent knows, it can be incredibly difficult to get your child in a desirable sleeping rhythm. Once it's achieved, there are very few seasons where these rhythms last. Therefore, adding or losing an hour can really throw everyone off their game.

These days, it doesn't seem to matter what time BabyK goes to bed, (we've tried gradually putting her down earlier and later than the current 6pm bedtime) she always seems to wake up around 5am. It wouldn't be so bad if she played quietly until our alarm went off at 6am, but instead she sits crying out "Hug, mommy" until we rescue her. It's simultaneously super sweet and heart-wrenching. But the worse part of all was knowing that come November 7th, that 5am wake up would become a 4am nightmare.

For the last month we have been making preparations for the big day. BabyK now has a toddler bed, and a mattress below incase she rolls out. Her room has been baby-proofed and she even was given a GroClock. For the week preceding we have slowly moved her bedtime later. All that was left to do was to say a prayer, and see what would happen. Here's what happened....

IT WORKED! By the grace of God BabyK had the smoothest adjustment to a time change she has ever had in her life. The GroClock is a huge success and I haven't felt as well rested in months. Something that I was once so scared of, has now worked in my favour. That's just the kind of God we serve. He takes the bad, and uses if for good. He will always have the final victory.

Genesis 50:20a

"You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good."
